Stopped by Firestone the other night when we were downtown. I had a the Hal-a-peno burger which was great and my friend had the tri tip sandwhich which was pretty good too. I think the best thing about Firestone are the fries. They are perfectly seasoned. Downsides of Firestone are the long lines and how loud it is.
Whenever old college friends are in town, they always want to make a pit stop at Firestone. Usually pretty busy, but that's how it goes. The tri-tip sandwiches are pretty good at Firestone (they go a little heavy on super sugary BBQ sauce for me) but their burgers are much better. I usually get the Hal-a-Peno burger. Never been disapointed. My wife usually gets a salad. She tried the tri-tip / steak salad a few times but would always get grisly / fatty pieces of meat. Would recommend getting chicken on a salad if you're going to go that route.
I really don't understand why everyone loves Firestone so much. There are always crazy long lines, it's really loud inside, hard to find a table, and average BBQ. It's not bad, but I really don't understand why everyone loves it.
Just about every restaurant in SLO has a tri tip sandwich; do yourself a favor and explore some of the other options. Or grab yourself a burger instead of the tri tip.
I went to Poly and we used to come here. I remember it as being pretty great. In recent years, I have favored some of the other local BBQ establishments (such as Old San Luis BBQ).
The tri tip sandwich has a TON of meat but the bread is what really makes the sandwich - it has great flavor. The meat itself is kind of bland and over done. If you go to other BBQ places in SLO, you'll notice that they have a lot more flavor (oaky smoke) to their tri tip. They give you a ton of sugary BBQ sauce, which is good, but needed to make up for the lack of flavor in the meat.
Overall, they do give you a ton of food and the fries are really awesome (great seasoning), the quality of the tri tip isn't that great.
We stopped by after Farmer's Market on Thursday and had another great meal. There were a lot of people and a long line but it moved pretty quickly. Since we all got tri tip sandos, we got our food pretty quickly (I'm pretty sure they just continuously pump out tri tip sandwiches). The tri tip and BBQ sauce is the perfect combo.
Firestone Grill is always a great experience; I'm never disappointed. Pro tip: make sure to ask for extra BBQ sauce when you pick up your sandwich!
